What is Affiliate Marketing?

Affiliate marketing is a great way of making money by promoting other people’s products and services. You get a commission from every sale of a product or service you promote to customers.

Your commission may range from 15% to 75% of the sale price. For example, you become an affiliate of Company A and you promote their product worth $97 to a customer and a sale is made; at 75% commission rate, Company A will pay you $72.75. Can you imagine how much money you can make if you could make at least 1 sale per day for this certain product? Or let’s say even 10 sales a week?
It is possible actually if you know what you are doing.

Well, you may say, why such a high commission rate? It is because most of the companies wanted as many sales that could be generated and the best way to do this would be to let affiliate marketers do the promotion for them.

In my opinion, instead of them spending on advertising and doing the work alone, they can leverage their time through affiliates. They can even have wider publicity because they could reach out to more customers through their affiliate network. Actually, 75% commission on affiliate products is common in the marketplace especially digital products.

How Affiliate Marketing Works

The Parties Involved in Affiliate Marketing

1. Merchant – The merchant refers to the owner of the product or service you will be promoting. The product can either be physical products (like golf clubs, beauty products, sports wares, home/car accessories and furniture) or digital products. (such as software, e-books, videos and or movies.

2. Affiliate – This is you! And for you to earn money from the merchant is to promote the merchant’s products with various marketing methods so that every time customers buy though your affiliate link, you get paid based upon the percentage set by the merchant. It is important to note here though that as an affiliate you are not an employee of the merchant. It is not a contract job. This means you are in business on your own. It is your job to look for ways and means on how to let people come to your merchant’s website and make the purchase as they wanted.

3. Affiliate Network – This is a registered company where vendors and merchants meet. They serve as an intermediary between the vendor and affiliate. The affiliate networks enable merchants to offer publishers or affiliates a share of any revenue that is generated by the merchant from visitors to the publisher's site, or a fee for each visitor on the publisher's site that completes a specific action (making a purchase, registering for a newsletter, etc.). They also do the tracking, reporting and payment of sales to merchants and commissions to affiliates.

4. Customers – These are the people who purchase the products or service provided by the vendor. It is your job as affiliate marketer to help these people by knowing what their problems are and then recommending them with the affiliate products that you believe will help them solve their problem.

In summary, you register as an affiliate from an affiliate program – (in this guide, we focus on
joining affiliate programs through affiliate networks); choose a product or service to promote, promote your affiliate offer to people who need them, the people will then purchase from the vendors website bearing your affiliate id and you get paid with your sales commissions through check or wire transfer.
